Program Description

Event Details

Native American words and foods (who hasn’t had popcorn?) are all around us. Never mind all the place names! In fact, more than half of all the U.S. states have Native American name origins, as well as the many cities, counties, and rivers, like the nearby Catawba.

Over the years, Native Americans have been portrayed unfortunately, as villains in film and books. Luckily, that’s all changing, including several of the sports team names too.

USC-Lancaster Professor and Director of the Native American Studies Center in Lancaster, Dr. Stephen Criswell will discuss the huge impact that Native Americans have made on our popular culture and dispel myths along the way.

This program aligns with YCL’s cultural literacy framework, which addresses the ability to understand and appreciate the similarities and differences in the customs, values, and beliefs of one’s own culture and the cultures of others.
